1999 Global Meeting

25-30 April, Pokhara, Nepal

As of 1998, six of the nine original countries participating in the project (Nepal, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Morocco and Mexico) had started to collect and analyze information on farmers' perceptions and measured data for socioeconomic factors, natural and environmental selection factors, population structure, agromorphological selection, seed supply systems and adding value to local crop resources.

The purpose of the third annual meeting was, therefore, for the national project partners of these six countries that have started data collection, together with technical advisors, IPGRI staff and relevant donors, to:

  • discuss, compare and critique data that have been collected by the six countries that have begun data collection

  • compare sampling strategies and data analysis packages

  • compare options for enhancing diversity conservation through adding value to local crop systems, and

  • share problems in project implementation and identify solutions

The meeting also included the review and refining of sampling strategies and data analysis in the following areas:

  • socioeconomic factors influencing farmer decision-making

  • genetic diversity on-farm

  • farmer criteria for distinguishing farmer named varieties and for preferred agromorphological traits

  • biochemical and molecular measurements for target crops

  • natural and human-managed environmental factors, including a review of literature on disease and pest and local crop diversity

  • seed supply systems of the participating counties

  • data analysis option/ programmes useful for in situ conservation on-farm

  • economic, social and ecological value of on-farm conservation

In addition, the following topics were covered:

  • options for diversity enhancement through adding value to local crop resources

  • gender participation at the level of training and project management, and draft training materials for national programmes for on-farm conservation for review by the project participants.

All national partners presented papers based on their work so far with regards to creating national frameworks, research in the areas of agro-ecosystems, socioeconomics, gender, agromorphological characteristics, population structure and breeding systems, and seed supply systems, and adding benefits.  These have been published with the Proceedings of the meeting.
