Burkina Faso

In situ conservation and research in Burkina Faso will be implemented in the country's three main agroecological zones: the Sahelian zone in the centre and centre-north, the Soudano-Sahelian zone to the west, and the Soudanian zone to the southeast, which are distinguished by annual precipitation. Agroecosystems are characterized as arid and semi-arid tropical.

The research sites have been identified on the basis of the presence of crop diversity, the soil type, and the comparative importance of landraces in the area.  Crops addressed by the project are sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), okra (Abelmoschus esculentus, A. caillei) and African potato (Solenostomum).  Preliminary diagnostic surveys have been implemented.  The project has a national character, with the NARS (including the university) as the lead institute.  NGOs and the government extension service participate at the local level.
