The Electronic Seed Storage Behaviour (ESSB) Compendium

Categories of seed storage behaviour in the Compendium: summary of classification criteria and percent breakdown of the total number of species classified under each.

ORTHODOX

INTERMEDIATE

RECALCITRANT

UNCERTAIN

"Orthodox": 62% of all species listed; including all those where it could be determined with certainty that the species shows orthodox seed storage behaviour.

"Orthodox ?": 18% of all species listed are in this group; for seeds of these species the probability that the species shows orthodox seed storage behaviour is greater than 0.5.

"Orthodox p (probable)": 9% of all species; high probability that the species shows orthodox seed storage behaviour...

"Intermediate": 1% of the total number of species listed are classified in this group; seeds of these species tolerate desiccation to about 10-12% mc, but further desiccation reduces viability

"Intermediate?": 1% of the species listed have seeds whose viability can be damaged by "excessive" drying. Species in this category are NOT believed to be recalcitrant.

"Recalcitrant": 3% of the total number of species in the Compendium are classified in this category which includes all species for which the lowest "safe" moisture content exceeds 20% m.c.and where no evidence to the contrary has been found

"Recalcitrant?": 4% of the species belong to this category which includes all those which are generally "short-lived", whose viablility is difficult to maintain and/or for which only "moist storage" recommendations are available in the literature.

"Uncertain": 2% of the species in the Compendium belong to this category; data available on these species precludes their classification into any of the other groups.
