Installation Instructions for
the Electronic Seed Storage
Behaviour Compendium
(Windows version)
SOFTWARE/HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
- To install the Windows version of the Electronic Seed Storage Behaviour Compendium you must have either Windows 95 or Windows NT workstation version 3.51 or 4.0.
- The minimum memory requirements are: 12 Mb for Windows 95 and 16 Mb for Windows NT.
- The more memory the faster the SSB will run. You will also need at least 20 Mb of free disk space for installation.
- This version of the SSB is NOT network compatible. It must be installed on a stand-alone computer.
- When installing under Windows NT 4.0, the profile under which the SSB will be installed must have been given "administrator" privileges.
DOWNLOADING THE FILES FROM THE WEB:
To download these files [click here]. Choose the 'Save this program to disk' option, click OK, select the c:\temp\ folder and save the file. (NOTE: This zipped file is 5 MB)
Now, go to your File Manager or Windows NT Explorer and locate the c:\temp\ssb.exe file. Double click on the file and the WinZip Self-Extractor will appear. In the 'Unzip to folder:' text box type c:\temp\ and then click on 'Unzip'.
A folder called "SSB" with four sub-folders: "Disk1", "Disk2", "Disk3" and "Disk4" will then be automatically created in the c:\temp directory.
You can download also the zipped file without self-extractor plugin: ssb.zip.
INSTALLATION OF THE COMPENDIUM:
The Windows version of the Electronic Seed Storage Behaviour Compendium, which you are about to install, is a relational database which consists of species records from data that has been classified into five different tables - Family, Genus, Species, Common name and Storage Behaviour. The database should be used in conjunction with Part I of the Compendium.
Part I:The Introduction
Part I of the Compendium is a 118 page Word document
summarising the progress that has been made over the last two decades
in the understanding of seed physiology in relation to seed storage.
To view/print "Part 1" of the Compendium,
using Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, find:
c:\temp\ssb\disk4\compwin.exe and click on it. Follow the prompts on
the screen and save the file to c:\temp\ssb\. Then open Microsoft Word
and open file c:\temp\ssb\newcompwin.doc.
Part II: The database
Using Windows NT Explorer or File Manager go to application c:\temp\ssb\disk1\setup.exe and double click. Follow the prompts which appear on the screen for installation. The program will automatically create the folder c:\ssb\. After successful installation, the Electronic Seed Storage Behaviour Compendium can be opened through the "START" menu by selecting "Programs" then "Seed Storage Behaviour" (purple flower icon). Alternatively, go to File Manager or Windows NT Explorer and click on the c:\ssb\ssb to run the application.
