Genetic Resources Policy Initiative goes Online

The Genetic Resources Policy Initiative-GRPI, a project coordinated at IPGRI's regional office for Sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi is now online. GRPI aims to strengthen the capacity of countries in the south to develop comprehensive policy frameworks for the conservation and use of their genetic resources . it is currently being implemented in Egypt, Ethiopia, Nepal, Peru Vietnam and Zambia. Abdou Salam Ouédraogo  Fellowship for 2004 awarded

This year's Abdou Salam Fellowship has been awarded to Abwao Stephen Indieka, a Kenyan national, to carry out research entitled "Enhancing conservation and utilization of Melia volkensii through vegetative propagation protocols". It is expected that this study will contribute to increasing the availability of planting materials of M. volkensii, a valuable but difficult to propagate tree species in Kenya. Abwao, who is also an M Sc student at Kenyatta University, will conduct this research in collaboration with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). details

Vavilov-Frankel Fellowships for 2004

One of this year's Vavilov-Frankel Fellowships was awarded to Gaoue Orou Gande, of the Laboratoire d'Ecologie Appliqué, Faculté de Sciences Agronomiques, Université d'Abomey-Calavi of Benin,  to study the impact of bark and leaf harvesting on the genetic diversity of Khaya species in Benin. details
