The Genetic Resources Policy Initiative-GRPI, a project coordinated at IPGRI's regional office for Sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi is now online. GRPI aims to strengthen the capacity of countries in the south to develop comprehensive policy frameworks for the conservation and use of their genetic resources . it is currently being implemented in Egypt, Ethiopia, Nepal, Peru Vietnam and Zambia. An announcement applications for the 2005 Abdou Salaam Fellowship has been released. Deadline for receiving applications is 30 September, 2004.
This year's Abdou Salam Fellowship has been awarded to Abwao Stephen Indieka, a Kenyan national, to carry out research entitled "Enhancing conservation and utilization of Melia volkensii through vegetative propagation protocols". It is expected that this study will contribute to increasing the availability of planting materials of M. volkensii, a valuable but difficult to propagate tree species in Kenya. Abwao, who is also an M Sc student at Kenyatta University, will conduct this research in collaboration with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). details
