IPGRI has worked to develop a highly efficient networking approach to
genetic resources since its early days. Networks bring together members
with common interests/problems, enabling them to share resources,
information and technologies. In sub-Saharan Africa, the network
mechanism is based on several structures, the largest of which are
sub-regional networks covering West and Central Africa, southern Africa
and Eastern Africa. There are also banana networks covering eastern and
southern Africa, and Western and Central Africa.
IPGRI
in sub-Saharan Africa works through partnerships. Through the
International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP),
which is one of the three programmes of IPGRI, the institute pursues
a wide range of activities related to these crops in the region via
the Banana Research Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (BARNESA)
and its equivalent in Western and Central Africa, MUSACO
IPGRI in SSA also has a significant forestry component, under the
auspices of the sub-Saharan Africa
Forest Genetic Resources-SAFORGEN Network.
