The immense area of forests in southeastern Europe and in the Caucasus is one of
the last genuine reservoirs of biological diversity. For many southeast European
countries, forests provide a basis for economical development in the transition
period towards market-oriented economies. The purpose of this collaborative
activity is to strengthen the national
capacity in the countries of the region to ensure genetically sustainable
management of broadleaved forest resources.
The project (started in 1997) has been focused on broadleaved tree species with high ecological and economic importance. The project activities involved three neighboring countries with similar natural conditions and forest management traditions: Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania (from 1997 to 2002)
- see Eco-Geographic inventories and
Research-.
Presently the project is involving Ukraine and Georgia.
