The Central Asia and Trans-Caucasus Network on Plant Genetic Resources (CA-TC/PGR)

 Central Asia & Trans Caucasus

West Asia & North
   Africa

IPGRI CWANA Library, 2001The Central Asia and Trans-Caucasus Network on Plant Genetic Resources was established during an international workshop held in Central Asia in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1996. The establishment of CA-TCN/PGR was sought by countries as a vehicle to enhance the coordination of PGR activities at both the national and regional level. Specific goals of the Network include:

1) the establishment of an up-to-date information system on PGR for Central Asia;

2) the strengthening of cooperation between Central Asian countries and the N.I Vavilov Institute (VIR) of St. Petersburg, Russia

3) the strengthening of capacity building on PGR within the national programs of Central Asia.

CA-TCN/PGR member countries include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. All countries have endorsed their membership to this network through formal notifications at the Ministerial level. The Network is organized into nine Working Groups:

Cereals

Grain legumes

Fodder and pasture crops

Fruit, berries, subtropical cultures and viticulture

Vegetables and melons

Industrial Crops

Wild (edible) medicinal and aromatic plants

Cotton

Forest Species

These Working Groups represent the implementing component of the Network. Current activities pursued by the Network, include the building up of a database on fruit and forest species and the follow-up on two project proposals already submitted to Donor Agencies (one on the establishment of a PGR documentation system in Central Asia (see C05F) and the other on the strengthening of in situ conservation of fruit trees). Both proposals address specific needs identified by countries through ad hoc Workshops organized by the Network in 1998 and 1999.
