Indigenous Knowledge (IK)

The CWANA group has been collaborating with Project C06 to promote the transfer of technology from developed advanced laboratories to the region.

In 1997 a researcher from Tunisia, Sondos Khouldi of the Institute Nationale de la recherche Scientifique et Technique in Tunis, was supported for carrying out work on molecular markers for Capparis spinosa (capers) at the Department of Agrobiology and Agrochemistry of the University of Tuscia, Viterbo.
Caper is an underutilized vegetable and medicinal plant, indigenous to the Mediterranean region, and a useful plant for land rehabilitation.

The Vavilov Frankel Fellowship for the year 2000 was granted to an Iranian researcher working on molecular characterization of Pistacia vera. IPGRI CWANA is collaborating closely with C06 for the supervision of the work that will be carried out at an American University where advanced molecular marker techniques will be learned by the awardees.
