Indigenous Knowledge (IK)

There is an increasing concern over the issue of sharing benefits derived from PGR material and its associated knowledge. Documentation of IK is the basis both for sharing knowledge and for recognition and establishing any property rights on PGR.
IK documentation can bridge the gap between formal systems of knowledge and intellectual property, and indigenous knowledge and traditional rights.

Staff from IPGRI’s Asia Pacific and Oceania (APO) group have initiated work in the area of IK documentation and have contacted the CWANA Group to jointly develop an IK information system that would allow the capture of data and their proper analyses, using for example the decision analytical tool, such as the fuzzy set analysis. This collaboration has resulted so far into a joint scientific paper presented at an international conference on medicinal plants held in Greece in July.
