IPGRI’s operating strategy in CWANA
IPGRI’s operating strategy in the (Central West Asia and North Africa) CWANA Region has been developed based upon an analysis of needs, challenges and opportunities in the region, as well as relevant studies and reports such as those produced through the FAO-GPA process in 1996.

The Strategy addresses the three institutional objectives of IPGRI, namely, the assessment of meeting of needs of countries; strengthening international collaboration; and developing and disseminating knowledge and technologies relevant to conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, within a regional context.

Measurable indicators have been identified to monitor progress in establishing and strengthening national programs as a result of IPGRI’s work in the region. Research is the driving force behind IPGRI’s work through joint research activities within the region.

Prioritization of activities and species is an essential element of the modus operandi of IPGRI in CWANA.  A continuous needs-assessment process of national programs guides the work of IPGRI in CWANA. Project proposals, submitted by partners from national programs or by a staff member, are assessed by an ad hoc Committee according to a number of criteria, such as the institutional strategic objectives, species coverage and national program priorities. Partners in the region include a variety of stakeholders, such as Governmental and non-Governmental research and development institutions and universities and farmer community organizations.

The CWANA team is composed of 30 staff members based in Aleppo-Syria, Tashkent-Uzbekistan, Touzer-Tunisia and Ghardaia-Algeria.

Members participate in the work of a Regional Project as well as other six thematic projects' activities, such as (Forest genetic resources), (Linking conservation and use) and (In situ/on-farm conservation). The Regional Project entitled “Building sustainable national plant genetic resources programmes and regional networks in Central and West Asia and North Africa” has eight activities that encompass most of the work undertaken by IPGRI in the region.

Goal

Plant Genetic Resources as a component of natural resources in the arid and semiarid ecosystems is managed in an efficient, sustainable and equitable way for the benefit of present and future generations.

Purpose

Strategic Action Plan and minimum capacity in National Programs are developed and implemented in a sustainable manner with national, regional and international partners.

Outputs

  • Needs are assessed and priority are set within sub-regional context (North Africa, Central Asia, Arabian Peninsula, Near East and West Asia)

  • Trained personnel

  • At least one center of excellence in each sub-region is identified/strengthened and used in capacity development

  • Networking mechanism at local, national and sub-regional levels are developed

  • Decision making tools are developed and implemented

  • Public Awareness Focal Points in each country are identified/strengthened and Regional Public Awareness Strategic Plan is developed

Activity

  • National and sub-regional workshops

  • Undergraduate, post-graduate and short term training course

  • Development of criteria to select the centers of excellence

  • Strengthen collaboration within sub regions through the use of centers of excellence within research projects

  • Promoting broaden participation of national Plant Genetic Resources committees (Non Governmental Organizations, farmers communities, etc.)

  • Technical, scientific, policy methodologies are developed

  • Data Base on Public Awareness contacts is developed

  • Regional meeting of Public Awareness Focal Points
