IPGRI Office for South Asia was established in July, 1988 in a facility provided by the National Bureau for Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) within its office complex at Pusa Campus, New Delhi, India. The office is now situated in the CG centres block of the National Agriculture Science Centre, which also houses offices of other CGIAR centres.

The Office is a sub-regional office of APO and is responsible for coordinating IPGRI activities and developing cooperation with the national programmes in South Asia.

The Office initiates, coordinates, promotes, assists and thus catalyzes the activities within the region in the field of plant genetic resources collecting, characterization, evaluation, documentation, conservation, utilization and exchange. It also assists in conducting training and help promote research projects. The Office is readily available to give technical advice on matters related to establishment and operation of national plant genetic resources programmes and genebanks in liaison activities with regional and global research centres of institute; and advising on project proposals/workplans and funding.
