The IPGRI Regional office for Asia, the Pacific and Oceania (IPGRI-APO) opened
its office in Serdang, Malaysia in January 1997 relocating from Singapore where
it operated for 4 years. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of
Malaysia and IPGRI was signed on December 24th, 1996, which recognized IPGRI's
international status and its Constitution. The then Minister of Agriculture Dato'
Dr. Amar Sulaiman Daud officiated at the ceremony and formally inaugurated the
Office at Serdang on 15th April 1997.
IPGRI has sub-regional offices in Beijing, Peoples Republic of China and New
Delhi, India to support the activities in East and South Asia, respectively.
There is also an IPGRI scientist posted to Nepal.
IPGRI activities in APO are carried out through a series of projects, which
have been developed in consultation with partners in the region. Many of these
activities involve thematic staff as well, who are based in Rome and other IPGRI
offices.
