Back to Americas home page Improving conservation strategies and technologies

Recognition of the need to improve the strategies and technologies used to conserve plant genetic resources has grown significantly in recent years, as countries attempt to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Global Plan of Action. IPGRI supports the development of new knowledge in conservation as well as the application of methods suitable for resource-poor environments. IPGRI's research on conservation focuses on topics such as:

Understanding the extent and distribution of genetic diversity
  Supporting collecting of genetic resources
Improving ex situ and in situ conservation and developing integrated approaches

During the last five years, Americas Group staff has been conducting research activities,
