IPGRI is interested in improving the health status of genetic resources collections and ensures that the germplasm exchanged through the networks it supports is healthy. IPGRI conducts research on screening techniques and methods to improve germplasm health and continues developing technical guidelines for the safe movement of germplasm. Collaborative research with national and international organizations on the phytosanitary problems affecting plant genetic resources management in the Americas started in 1998. Current research projects include the characterization of plant pathogens and pests affecting economically important crops in Latin America such as bananas, rice, coconut, beans, soybean, oil palm and fruit crops.
