Back to Americas home page Conserving and using forest genetic resources

The conservation of forests and the many species they contain is a major challenge for humankind. Little time is left to save the remaining forest areas, conferring special urgency on this aspect of IPGRI's work. IPGRI focuses its effort on forestry on generating knowledge and developing widely applicable methodologies. IPGRI's work on forestry is carried out in a range of forest ecosystems throughout the world, including the humid tropical forests of South America as well as the Atlantic forests of South and Central America. Work is almost always carried out in collaboration with FAO, the International Centre for Research in Agroforesty (ICRAF), and a number of international, regional and national institutions.

Forestry and forest genetic resources are important to many Latin American countries, as reflected in the wide range of organizations and institutes involved in forestry and forest conservation. However, a clear picture of who is involved and how they are linked is often lacking. IPGRI is identifying national and international organizations involved in the conservation or use of forest genetic resources in this region to promote regional networking as well as providing information on forestry issues. It is also conducting a three-year research project on the impact of human activities on forest genetic resources conservation, in collaboration with ICRAF and partners in Brazil, Argentina and Germany.
