Publications by IPGRI
From its earliest origins, IPGRI has
pursued a vigorous programme of publication as one of its primary
methods of communication. The Institute produces a variety of
publications that are a major, high-profile element in its
activities.
Strategy
The strategy of IPGRI's publications
effort is to produce a continually developing stream of output,
synthesizing and reviewing the very latest developments in the
science, policy and technology of plant genetic resources. The
material is adapted to the demands of IPGRI's audiences, using the
latest innovations and technological developments, and distributed
using conventional and electronic mechanisms.
Output
Since 1974, IPGRI has published almost
450 separate titles, generated from its own activities. The
publications are mainly in English. A number are available in
French, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese.
IPGRI produces a variety of
publications every year, and maintains an extensive backlist of its
previously published titles (see the Publications
by category). IPGRI's publications are aimed at different
audiences. National programme staff are priority targets for IPGRI's
research and institutional publications. Other audiences include
donors, policy-makers, NGOs and researchers. IPGRI produces several
institutional publications. The Plant
Genetic Resources Newsletter is a quarterly international
periodical published jointly by IPGRI and FAO. IPGRI's Annual
Report is another essential institutional product. Geneflow
is a popular annual publication aimed at donors and policy-makers,
dealing with developements in genetic resources. Plant
Genetic Resources Abstracts is a bibliographic tool
abstracting the literature. It is produced quarterly by CAB
International, with sponsorship from IPGRI.
Many of IPGRI's scientific and
technical publications emerge from IPGRI's project activities, often
as primary outputs. These publications are targeted at different but
highly specific audiences. Another area of IPGRI publication
activity is the production of reports of meetings, especially of
crop and regional genetic resources networks. IPGRI's Regional
Offices produce quarterly Regional
Newsletters. Increasingly, IPGRI's Regional Offices are also
producing publications themselves, responding to the needs of
specific regional audiences.
Distribution policy
IPGRI distributes its publications free
of charge, on first appearance to a defined mailing list. To
maximize audience and availability, IPGRI aims to place material in
the libraries of national programmes, genebanks, university
departments, research institutions, etc. IPGRI maintains stocks of
publications which it distributes on an ad hoc basis. Limited
numbers of specific titles may also be sent to individuals who can
show that they have a particular need for a personal copy of a
publication. To request publications, locate them on our
Thematical and alphabetical search
page or on our Multicriteria search and then place an order.
IPGRI is increasingly using the Web to
distribute its publications by making PDF copies of the material
available for downloading from its Web pages. This is a continuing
process. At the moment only a limited number of titles are available
in this format.
