Short Technical Course in APO Offered by IPGRI
In the APO region, IPGRI annually organizes several training courses of 2-3 weeks each on specific topics related to conservation and use of PGR. Each course is offered to 10-20 trainees who are presently working on PGR activities in the region. The regional courses are open to trainees from across APO but offered in a host country institution in the region (generally a centre of excellence for the topic of the course), while the national courses focus on training staff from institutions within a single country. Generally, 2-3 partner organizations in addition to IPGRI join as co-organizers of the course. Lectures and practical laboratory demonstrations are provided by resource persons from host organization or country and by IPGRI staff. Often, FAO helps in funding, co-organizing and providing trainers in such courses. For at least 6 months before each course takes place, intensive work is done to develop appropriate curriculum, prepare course contents and arrange field and laboratory sessions and select trainers and trainees.
Based on sets of modules, or lecture notes used
during course are often used to published training manuals, for use in subsequent short courses or for
self-training. Trainees are registered using IPGRI Alumni forms, which enable
IPGRI to provide them with information and other support after the trainee
returns to his/her organization. At the end of each course, trainees evaluate
the course and more recently, an action plan (re-entry plan) is developed for
follow-up activities based on the training.
