Back to Regional Networks The Pacific Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources Network (PAPGREN)

The Pacific Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources Network was launched at a meeting in September 2001 organized by IPGRI and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC). The Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu participated in the drawing up the Pacific Agricultural PGR Action Plan at that meeting, which guides the activities of the network. All countries in the region who are interested can become members of PAPGREN. In addition, PAPGREN collaborates with regional organizations such as SPREP, ForSec and USP, research institutions in New Zealand and Australia, regional and international crop networks (TANSAO, SPYN, COGENT, INIBAP) and international agricultural research centres. PAPGREN is coordinated by SPC and IPGRI, with support from NZAID and ACIAR.

Activities
Below are some of the areas that PAPGREN will be addressing, as agreed in the Pacific Agricultural PGR Action Plan.

Develop appropriate management strategies for agricultural PGR in the Pacific.
  • Analyse genetic diversity in priority species.

  • Rationalize germplasm collections of the region.

  • Investigate the seed storage and cryopreservation potential of priority crops.

  • Support on-farm conservation activities.

  • Promote 'minor' species of local importance.

Promote the safe exchange of germplasm within and outside the region.
  • Exchange improved lines of taro and yams after virus indexing and disease surveys.

  • Facilitate the access by countries to selected lines from the ex situ collection of breadfruit in Hawaii for evaluation.

  • Promote the exchange of coconut accessions between countries and the International Coconut Genebanks (ICG) in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere.

  • Distribute banana accessions from the INIBAP Transit Centre to countries in the region.

  • Determine the location of PNG sugarcane lines in genebanks worldwide and facilitate access as needed.

  • Develop safe exchange protocols for priority crops in consultation with the Pacific Plant Protection Organization (PPPO) and national quarantine services.

Develop and co-ordinate documentation of agricultural PGR.
  • Make information from national collections, crop networks and international genebanks widely available to the region in different forms (CD-ROM, network web site, hard copies).

  • Establish mechanisms for exchange of information with farmers, including traditional knowledge, with adequate safeguards.

Enhance awareness of the importance of PGR at the national and regional level.
  • Analyze country needs and develop a  regional training strategy.

  • Develop a PGR education kit in collaboration with education ministries.

  • Enhance the capacity of the University of the South Pacific to provide undergraduate and postgraduate training in PGR.

  • Provide information materials to stakeholders.

  • Disseminate information to stakeholders through scientific papers, seminars, newsletters and the media.

  • Generate funding proposals.

Assist in the development of national and regional policies to promote conservation and sustainable use of PGR with adequate sharing of benefit.
  • Enhance stakeholder awareness of policy options.

  • Work to harmonize national and regional policies on PGR.

  • Encourage the use of a standard material transfer agreement (MTA) by PICs.
