CGIAR System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP)

IPGRI is the convening Centre of the CGIAR System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP). As such, it is responsible for hosting the Secretariat of the SGRP. The coordination of the SGRP is a key element of IPGRI's third programme, the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme.

The SGRP joins the genetic resources programmes and activities of the 16 Centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in a partnership whose goal is to maximize collaboration, particularly in five thematic areas.  The thematic areas - policy, public awareness, information, knowledge and technology, and capacity-building - relate to issues or fields of work that are critical to the success of global genetic resources efforts.

The SGRP was created in 1994 to focus the CGIAR's response to dynamic and rapidly evolving practical and policy challenges in the realm of biodiversity. It embraces all of the genetic resources activities of the CGIAR Centres; these include Centre programmes on crop, livestock, forestry, and aquatic biodiversity.

The CGIAR System-wide Information Network for Genetic Resources (SINGER) - an activity of the SGRP -  is the genetic resources information exchange network of the Centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It provides access to information on the collections of genetic resources held by the CGIAR Centres. Together, these collections comprise over half a million samples of crop, forage and tree germplasm of major importance for food and agriculture.
